Meal balance reports were originally designed to indicate that a negative balance means money is due. The reasoning being that many schools once required all meals to be pre-payed. They were not sending out bills, but a statement of their account balance. Just like a bank account, it doesn't show a negative number when you have money in it. Only when you have over-drawn your account is it reflected as a negative number.
